The mar resistance test for coatings is very similar to the scratch resistance test. However, this test uses an arc-shaped (loop or ring-shaped) stylus to assess the mar resistance of a single coating layer, paint, varnish, related product, or the upper layer of a multi-coat system
The product or system under test is applied at a uniform thickness to flat panels with a consistent surface texture. After drying or curing, mar resistance is determined by pushing the panel beneath a curved (loop- or ring-shaped) stylus, which is mounted to press on the panel surface at a 45° angle. The load on the test panel is increased stepwise until the coating is marred
This test is useful for comparing the mar resistance of different coatings and is particularly effective at providing relative ratings for a series of coated panels with significant differences in mar resistance
Please note: this test does not specify a method using a pointed stylus (as per ISO 1518-1 and ISO 1518-2). The choice among these three methods depends on your specific requirements
